Inclusiveness in the fashion world: celebrating pride month

Introduction

In celebration of Pride month, we want to highlight the importance of inclusivity in fashion. The fashion industry plays a significant role in promoting acceptance, inclusion and self-love. In this article, we will explore how fashion can be a powerful tool for celebrating individuality, and how brands and consumers can help create an inclusive space for all.

The importance of inclusiveness in fashion

Inclusiveness in fashion goes far beyond just clothing.

It is an opportunity to express one’s identity and to embrace every nuance. It has always been fashion to represent, as a free and courageous art form, one’s way of being, thinking, feeling, and experiencing one’s body and preferences.

Fashion means subversion, rebellion, belonging, expression, emancipation.

Even when unwritten social rules dictated ordinances, something happened in the fashion world that shattered every constructed belief, and so new eras were enshrined.

Fashion, then, as a carrier of messages, ideas and thoughts.

Symbolism of personal and social struggles, fashion today is the ultimate in breaking the mold. Elegance of the 1920s, the position of women in the 1960s, the independence of the 1980s until today, a time when fashion becomes fluid, knows no restraints or limits, going far beyond the catwalk and carrying messages shouted as if from a megaphone.

Every individual has the right to feel represented and respected in the fashion industry. Inclusiveness means breaking gender stereotypes, rejecting discrimination based on sexual orientation and promoting respect for all races, religions and cultures.

Fashion can play a key role in educating and inspiring positive change. When brands choose to embrace inclusivity, they send a message of acceptance that goes beyond the runways. Industry has the power to speak to a large audience in society, so it is important that it be responsible in promoting inclusive values.

Fashion and pride: examples of companies

Levi’s

Levi’s, a brand that has always been actively supportive of the LGBTQIA+ community, decided to honor the strength, history, and creativity of this community through their inspiring campaign this year entitled“How Do You Show Up?” In this extraordinary campaign, the protagonists are individuals from the community, each with a unique style and a totally personal perspective on self-expression.

Levi’s new limited-edition collection, featuring lavender hues, is a tribute to the brave activists and activists who have fought for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community in the past. However, what makes this collection even more significant is its explicit support for nonbinary and fluid gender expression.

Levi’s collection not only offers high-quality clothing, but also creates a space where each individual can feel comfortable, encouraging others to express their uniqueness. It conveys a message of acceptance, support and celebration of diverse identities and the many facets of self-expression. In this way, Levi’s demonstrates its ongoing commitment to promoting a fashion industry that is inclusive and respectful of all people.

Louis Vuitton

Each year LVMH enthusiastically celebrates its ongoing commitment to fighting discrimination against the LGBTI+ community. It highlights the concrete actions taken on the ground by its prestigious Maisons and its vast international network of employees, united under the“All LVMH Pride” initiative. It also marks a historic moment for the Group, participating for the first time in Pride Walk marches in several cities around the world, including Paris, London, New York, Wilton Manors, Los Angeles and Tokyo.

As part of the “PRIDE – Walk the Talk” event held on May 30, 2023, LVMH highlights its team’s ongoing efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace. An initiative organized by the Group’s Human Resources Department, Chantal Gaemperle, EVP, Human Resources and Synergies, and Vanessa Moungar, Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, are joined by a variety of prominent personalities both inside and outside LVMH.

Dr.Martens

Dr. Martens‘ resourcefulness entrusted the creation of two pairs of adult unisex shoes to two talented artists: illustrator Loveis Wise and Japanese artist specializing in zines, Fuyuki Kanai.

They also came up with a third rainbow-inspired design that gives a lively twist to the classic 1461 Oxfords, and they did not forget to offer coordinating styles for toddlers and infants as well. The brand reaffirmed its commitment to supporting The Trevor Project through a donation, which will help provide essential mental health services for youth in the LGBTQ+ community. With this initiative, Dr. Martens once again demonstrates its dedication to promoting inclusion and supporting the mental well-being of the younger generation.

Year-round Pride month

These companies are joined by others-Ugg, Ralph Lauren, Nordström, adidas, and many others. An effort that comes alive in June but has persisted for years. The real treat, in fact, is that most fashion companies have been pursuing these values since the date of their inception, which for some coincides with 30 or 40 years ago.

A real, concrete commitment that also represents us externally.

Tannery Montebello works behind the scenes, collaborating with some of the leading fashion brands who are exposing themselves and shouting loudly that fashion belongs to everyone.

our way of celebrating pride month? Our Fast Collection, off-the-shelf leather available for creatives, artisans and fashion realities.

A collection, this one, that pays homage to color, small realities, inclusion and the power of beauty.
